Washington County is located in eastern Tennessee, and as of 2009, the county population was just over 120,000. Jonesborough is its county seat, and Johnson City serves as the commercial, medial, and educational center. The county’s climate features four distinct seasons with summer temperatures averaging a mid of 80s and winter temperatures averaging a high in the mid 40s.
Washington County was established in 1777 as Washington County, North Carolina, and it was not established as part of Tennessee until 1796. It was named after George Washington while the Revolutionary War was taking place. Tennessee’s oldest city, Jonesborough, is located in this county, and it is one of the nation’s most authentic historic districts from the 1790-1870 time period.
Visitors to Washington County may enjoy visiting educational and historical sites including the East Tennessee State University Natural History Museum and the Jonesborough History Museum. Nature enthusiasts may enjoy Johnson City’s Willow Springs Park, and visitors to Jonesborough may chose to visit the International Storytelling Center. Ghost tours are also available in the area, and the town is also home to the Wetlands Water Park.
