Kingsport, TN is located primarily in Sullivan County, but some of the western portions of the city lie in Hawkins County. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the population was just over 48,000 residents. This city is included in the Mountain Empire, which spans the mountainous counties in eastern Tennessee and a portion of southwest Virginia, and it is also the largest city within the Kingsport-Bristol, TN- Bristol, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The city of Kingsport is located on the Holston River, and this coupled with the region’s mild weather of cool winters and hot summers made Bristol a prime shipping port in the past. Kingsport was home of the Battle of Kingsport during the American Civil War. The city is also known for urging the public hanging of Mary the circus elephant in 1916, after she had killed assistant trainer Walter Eldridge.
Kingsport is home to a variety of parks and educational sites, including Bays Mountain Park, the Exchange Place, and Warriors’ Path State Park. The Netherland Inn is also popular for tourists, and it features a house museum and boatyard complex. Attractions for family fun include the Putt-Putt Fun Center and Warpath Bowling Lanes.
