Jonesborough, TN is located in Washington County in the northeastern region of the state. As of the 2000 census the town had a population of just over 4,000. Founded in 1779, Jonesborough is the state’s oldest town. The town was named after Willie Jones, a legislator from North Carolina who supported the state’s expansion over the Appalachian Mountains, and was a major player in the abolitionist movement during the Civil War.
Jonesborough is located where the Nolichucky River watershed meets the Watauga watershed. The area is surrounded by ridges and low hills, which are typical of areas within the Appalachian Ridge-and Valley Province. Eastern Tennessee is also known to have mild weather with cool winters and warm summers, making it a desirable area for retirement.
Jonesborough’s visitors have ample opportunity to learn about the history of this historic town. Travelers can visit the Jonesborough History Museum or view a production at the Jonesborough Repertory Theater. Ghost tours are also available in the area, and the town is also home to the Wetlands Water Park. The water park offers family fun during Jonesborough’s hot summer months.
