Erwin, TN is located in Unicoi County along the Nolichucky River in Northeast Tennessee. The total population of Erwin, according to the 2000 census, is just over 5000 residents. Erwin falls in the humid subtropical climate zone characterized by hot summers, cool winters, and small amounts of snow.
Originally named Ervin in honor of land donator D.J.N. Ervin, the town was later renamed Erwin after a clerical error was made by post office workers. Industry has been very important to the economy of Erwin with the Southern Potteries plant operating in Erwin up until 1957. This company produced Blue Ridge hand painted dishware, still popular among collectors. Nuclear Fuel Services currently has a major facility in Erwin that produces enriched uranium for processing into nuclear reactor fuel.
Erwin is home to a variety of unique activities and historical sites. Visitors may enjoy learning about the town’s history with the Historic Erwin Tennessee Ghost and History Tours. Visitors will learn about Civil War battles in East Tennessee and tour the J.F. Toney Memorial Library and Unicoi County Heritage Museum. The town of Erwin is also home to Unicoi County’s Apple Festival where visitors can enjoy a variety of foods, vendors, and musical performances.
